Located in Brittany, this region provided Luce with a subject matter that allowed him to explore the interplay of light and water. The composition is anchored by the vertical forms of trees on the right, which frame the expanse of the bay and the distant shoreline.

Luce employs a technique that balances the scientific rigour of pointillism with a more fluid, painterly approach. The brushwork is soft, creating a sense of atmospheric haze that softens the edges of the rocky outcrops and the foliage. The palette is dominated by cool blues and greens, contrasted by the warm, sandy tones of the foreground and the small island in the centre. This colour harmony conveys the specific quality of light found in northern French coastal areas, where the sky and sea often merge in a soft, diffused glow.

Unlike his earlier, more rigid divisionist works, this painting shows a transition toward a freer application of paint. The focus remains on the observation of natural phenomena, specifically the way light reflects off the water and filters through the canopy of the trees. The scene is devoid of human activity, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the physical geography of the site. By choosing to depict this specific location, Luce documents the rugged beauty of the Breton coast, a recurring theme in his later career. The work functions as a study of light and atmosphere, demonstrating the artist's ability to translate the transient qualities of the natural world into a stable, composed image on canvas.

You might also like

The Cap Gris Nez by Théo van Rysselberghe
Haven met een vuurtoren by Claude Lorrain

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Kermouster_Poster_CompositorV1_1792110050677.jpg?v=1792301280
