kinderstern-max-bill
Kinderstern - Max Bill

A geometric screenprint by Max Bill, featuring his iconic Kinderstern motif composed of overlapping coloured planes.

Max Bill, a central figure in the development of Concrete Art, created the Kinderstern (Children's Star) motif in 1989. This work represents his approach to visual communication, where mathematical precision and clarity of form dictate the composition. The design features a four-pointed star shape, constructed through the overlapping of geometric planes. The arrangement relies on the interaction of primary and secondary colours, creating a sense of movement and depth within a strictly two-dimensional space.

Bill studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he absorbed the principles of functional design and the reduction of art to its essential elements. His work often avoids representational imagery, preferring instead to explore the relationships between colour, line, and plane. The Kinderstern is a specific example of his later work, where he applied these rigorous principles to create a symbol that is both accessible and intellectually disciplined. The sharp angles and clean edges of the star demonstrate his mastery of geometric construction, ensuring that the visual impact remains consistent regardless of scale.

In this print, the overlapping segments create a secondary colour palette, as the layers of red, green, orange, and blue interact. The composition is balanced, with each arm of the star mirroring the others to form a stable, yet dynamic, whole. By stripping away extraneous detail, Bill forces the viewer to engage directly with the mechanics of the image. This piece is a clear demonstration of his belief that art should be an objective, logical pursuit, free from the subjective emotionalism of earlier movements. The print remains a recognisable example of his contribution to twentieth-century graphic design and abstract art, maintaining a focus on the clarity of geometric relationships.

You might also like

Cassiopée II NB by Victor Vasarely
Two Centimeter Wavy Bands in Colors by Sol LeWitt
Max Bill artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Kinderstern_Poster_CompositorV1_1792125051303.jpg?v=1792291581
