This work, titled Lady Nelly - the Flirt, captures a quiet moment of social observation. Keene possessed a keen eye for the nuances of middle-class life, often focusing on the subtle interactions between individuals in public spaces. His technique relies on precise, controlled hatching to build form and shadow, creating a sense of volume without the need for heavy washes or colour.

In this scene, two men are seated, likely on a boat or a pier, with a nautical backdrop featuring sailboats and a distant shoreline. The figure on the left sits with a relaxed, perhaps slightly arrogant posture, his hand resting near his face. His companion remains hunched, seemingly absorbed in his own thoughts or perhaps the conversation at hand. The composition is balanced, using the horizontal lines of the water and the sky to ground the figures. Keene avoids unnecessary detail, allowing the characterisation of the men to take precedence. The cross-hatching technique provides texture to their clothing and the wooden bench, demonstrating the technical skill required for high-quality reproduction in nineteenth-century periodicals.

Keene was highly regarded by his contemporaries, including artists such as Edgar Degas and Camille Pissarro, who admired his ability to capture the essence of a scene with minimal means. His work provides a window into the social customs and fashions of the era, presented with a dry, observational wit. This print is a fine example of his ability to convey narrative through gesture and posture, offering a glimpse into a specific social dynamic of the late Victorian period.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Lady-Nelly-the-Flirt_Poster_CompositorV1_1791874479124.jpg?v=1791874569
