landscape-near-kyiv-kazimir-malevich
Landscape near Kyiv - Kazimir Malevich

An early Post-Impressionist oil painting by Kazimir Malevich, depicting a rural house near Kyiv with expressive brushwork and a focus on atmospheric light.

This early work by Kazimir Malevich captures a rural scene near Kyiv, reflecting the artist's formative years before his transition into the geometric abstraction of Suprematism. The composition features a traditional dwelling with a prominent red roof, partially obscured by a cluster of bare trees in the foreground. The application of paint is thick and expressive, showing the influence of Post-Impressionist techniques and a focus on the tactile quality of the surface.

The colour palette relies on earthy tones for the ground and structure, contrasted against the cooler, violet-toned sky. Malevich uses short, visible brushstrokes to define the forms, creating a sense of movement within the static environment. The trees act as a screen, framing the house and adding depth to the scene through their vertical alignment. This piece provides a view into the artist's early engagement with light and colour, demonstrating his ability to interpret the rural environment through a lens of personal observation rather than strict realism.

While Malevich is widely recognised for his later non-objective paintings, this work illustrates his grounding in the traditions of European modernism at the turn of the century. The treatment of the shadows on the ground and the textured rendering of the building walls suggest an interest in how light interacts with physical surfaces. It is a study of a specific place, rendered with a focus on atmosphere and the materiality of oil paint. This print offers an opportunity to observe the early development of an artist who would eventually reshape the trajectory of twentieth-century art.

You might also like

Hackery - Volodymyr Orlovsky by Vladimir Orlovsky
Les Environs De Saint-Ay by Maximilien Luce

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Landscape-near-Kyiv_Poster_CompositorV1_1791962096499.jpg?v=1791962569
