Before his later shift toward geometric abstraction, Herbin engaged with the expressive potential of colour and form, a practice closely aligned with the Fauvist movement. The composition features a central tree trunk rendered in a striking, non-naturalistic pink, which divides the canvas and draws the eye across the scene.

The application of paint is deliberate and rhythmic. Herbin employs short, visible brushstrokes to construct the foliage and the water, creating a surface that feels active and tactile. The palette is composed of high-contrast hues, including deep forest greens, ochre yellows, and cool blues. These colours do not aim to replicate the natural appearance of the scene, but rather to convey the artist's subjective response to the environment. The waterway itself is suggested through simplified shapes and light-toned patches, reflecting the sky and surrounding vegetation.

Herbin's approach to space in this piece is flattened, prioritising the arrangement of colour blocks over traditional perspective. This technique reflects the influence of Post-Impressionist painters like Paul Cézanne, whose work encouraged artists to view the canvas as a constructed surface. By reducing the natural world to its essential components, Herbin creates a visual rhythm that guides the viewer through the composition. The work provides a clear view into the artist's early development, showing the transition from representational painting to the structured, abstract language he would refine throughout his career. It is a study in how colour can define form and space without the need for realistic detail or shading.

You might also like

Port of Antwerp by Georges Braque
The Botanical Garden by Raoul Dufy

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Landscape-of-a-Waterway_Poster_CompositorV1_1792123559671.jpg?v=1792297064
