Sonome was a notable figure in the literary circles of her time, maintaining a correspondence with the poet Matsuo Basho. The work features fluid, expressive brushwork characteristic of the period, where the rhythm of the ink application conveys both the literal meaning of the text and the personal temperament of the writer.

The calligraphy is set against a decorative silk backing, which features a repeating pattern of vines and leaves. This mounting provides a textural contrast to the smooth, pale surface of the paper. The composition follows traditional Japanese aesthetic principles, balancing the vertical columns of text with the negative space surrounding them. The ink varies in density, showing the pressure and speed of the brush as it moved across the page. Small red seals, or hanko, appear near the signature, serving as a mark of authenticity and ownership.

Shiba Sonome was known for her contributions to haikai poetry. Her writing style reflects the refined sensibilities of the urban literati in seventeenth and eighteenth-century Japan. The preservation of such a letter allows for a glimpse into the social and artistic exchanges of the era. The mounting, with its muted orange tones and gold-leaf accents, suggests that this document was intended to be displayed or kept as a treasured memento. The interplay between the written word and the textile design creates a cohesive visual object that functions as both a literary record and a decorative piece. This print captures the subtle nuances of the original ink strokes, maintaining the integrity of the brushwork and the delicate colouration of the silk mount.

You might also like

A Poem of Lament (Uzura-gire) - Fujiwara Akisuke — Fujiwara Akisuke
Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Letter_Poster_CompositorV1_1791273178439.jpg?v=1791274300
