lhorreur-surgit-le-corbusier
L'horreur surgit - Le Corbusier

A 1945 modernist composition by Le Corbusier, featuring a distorted figure rendered through interlocking geometric planes and a muted colour palette.

Le Corbusier, primarily known for his architectural contributions, maintained a rigorous painting practice throughout his career. L'horreur surgit, painted in 1945, reflects the artist's engagement with the human form through the lens of his Purist aesthetic. The composition is structured around a series of interlocking planes and geometric segments that break down the figure into a rhythmic arrangement of colour and line.

In this work, the figure is rendered with a deliberate lack of traditional perspective. The artist employs a palette of muted blues, ochres, and reds, which serve to flatten the pictorial space. The subject appears caught in a state of tension, with limbs and facial features distorted to fit the rigid geometry of the canvas. This approach aligns with the artist's broader interest in the relationship between human proportions and the built environment.

Unlike his architectural work, which prioritised function and clarity, his paintings often explored the irrational or the emotive. The title, translating to 'The horror arises', suggests a psychological dimension that contrasts with the calculated nature of the composition. The lines are bold and define the boundaries of each colour field, creating a sense of containment. The work functions as a study in balance, where the chaotic nature of the subject matter is held in check by the orderly application of paint and the systematic division of the frame. It remains a clear example of how the artist applied his theories of proportion and modular design to the canvas, treating the human body as a series of components to be organised within a defined space.

You might also like

Le Repos du modèle by Wifredo Lam
Femme et mains by Le Corbusier

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/L-horreur-surgit_Poster_CompositorV1_1792117478733.jpg?v=1792140450
