lions-and-fox-in-a-rugged-landscape-roelant-savery-1
Lions and Fox in a Rugged Landscape - Roelant Savery

A detailed animal study by Roelant Savery, featuring lions, a fox, and various birds within a dark, atmospheric forest setting.

Roelant Savery, a Flemish painter active during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, produced this work during a period when the depiction of exotic fauna was highly sought after by European collectors. Savery spent time at the court of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, where he gained access to the imperial menagerie. This experience informed his approach to animal anatomy and behaviour, which he often placed within dense, atmospheric settings.

The composition presents a collection of creatures gathered near a stream. Lions occupy the left foreground, while a fox and various birds are positioned among rocky outcrops and skeletal remains. The scene is characteristic of Savery's interest in the natural world, blending observation with a degree of artifice. The use of copper as a support allows for a high degree of precision in the rendering of fur, feathers, and the textures of the surrounding terrain. The lighting is low and moody, creating a sense of enclosure within the wooded environment.

Savery was part of a tradition that valued the encyclopaedic representation of nature. His works often feature a mix of domestic and wild animals, sometimes arranged in ways that suggest a narrative or moral allegory, though the primary focus remains the technical execution of the subjects. The inclusion of skulls and bones adds a memento mori element, a common trope in Northern European art of the era. This print captures the fine detail of the original oil painting, preserving the tonal shifts and the specific character of Savery's brushwork. It offers a view into the seventeenth-century fascination with the diversity of the animal kingdom, presented through a lens of careful observation and stylistic refinement.

You might also like

The Fox in the Snow by Gustave Courbet
The Fox and the Heron by Frans Snyders
Roelant Savery prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Lions-and-Fox-in-a-Rugged-Landscape_Poster_CompositorV1_1791953123974.jpg?v=1791953266
