Shunman was a central figure in the development of this refined style, which prioritised high-quality paper, subtle colour application, and sophisticated printing techniques.

The composition features a spiny lobster positioned alongside a hamayumi, a ceremonial miniature bow, accompanied by arrows and fans. In Japanese culture, the lobster is a symbol of longevity due to its bent back and long antennae, which evoke the appearance of an elderly person. The hamayumi is a traditional object used to ward off evil spirits, often displayed during the New Year period. By combining these elements, the artist creates a visual representation of auspicious wishes for the coming year.

The print demonstrates the technical precision typical of Shunman's work. The lines are delicate, capturing the texture of the lobster's shell and the precise construction of the bow. The colour palette remains restrained, allowing the natural tones of the subjects to emerge against the neutral background. The inclusion of calligraphy, which integrates seamlessly with the visual elements, is a hallmark of the surimono format. These prints were not intended for mass consumption but rather for a discerning audience that appreciated the interplay between visual art and classical literature.

Shunman's ability to balance these symbolic objects within a clean, uncluttered space reflects the aesthetic values of the Edo period literati. The print serves as a record of the cultural practices and artistic sensibilities of the time, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship achieved by Ukiyo-e artists working in the private sphere.

You might also like

Frolicking Figures and Animals - Kawanabe Kyōsai — Kawanabe Kyōsai
Mountains and Rivers Along the Kisokaidō - Utagawa Hiroshige — Utagawa Hiroshige

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Lobster-Hamayumi-Ceremonial-Miniature-Bow-with-Arrows-and-Fans_Poster_CompositorV1_1790845148176.jpg?v=1790846133
https://www.solisprints.com/products/lobster-hamayumi-ceremonial-miniature-bow-with-arrows-and-fans-kubo-shunman
