This work depicts a young Lord Stanhope mounted upon a dark pony, set against a moody, atmospheric backdrop. Ward employs a dramatic use of light and shadow, characteristic of the Romantic period, to draw attention to the subject while grounding the figure within a natural environment.

The composition balances the formal requirements of an aristocratic portrait with the artist's keen observation of equine anatomy. The pony is rendered with careful attention to its musculature and coat, reflecting Ward's background as an engraver and his deep interest in animal studies. The young rider, dressed in period attire, holds a top hat in a gesture of greeting or acknowledgement. His posture is relaxed yet poised, suggesting a sense of youthful confidence.

The background features a wooded area under a turbulent, cloud-filled sky. This choice of setting adds a sense of movement and scale to the scene, moving away from the static studio backdrops common in earlier portraiture. The brushwork is expressive, particularly in the treatment of the foliage and the sky, which creates a sense of depth and atmosphere. Ward's ability to integrate the human figure with the animal and the surrounding environment demonstrates his technical skill and his contribution to the development of British sporting and animal art. This print captures the textures of the original oil painting, from the sheen of the pony's coat to the soft fabric of the rider's clothing, offering a clear view of Ward's painterly approach.

You might also like

Queen Victoria on Horseback by Edwin Henry Landseer
Ruiter met hond by Anthonie van den Bos
More by James Ward →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Lord-Stanhope-Riding-a-Pony_Poster_CompositorV1_1792125410813.jpg?v=1792293912
