madonna-and-child-erasmus-quellinus-ii
Madonna and Child - Erasmus Quellinus II

A classic Flemish Baroque depiction of the Madonna and Child by Erasmus Quellinus II, showcasing the artist's mastery of light and humanised religious portraiture.

Erasmus Quellinus II, a prominent figure in the Flemish Baroque tradition, produced this depiction of the Madonna and Child during the mid-seventeenth century. Quellinus was a pupil and collaborator of Peter Paul Rubens, and his work reflects the stylistic influence of the Antwerp school. The composition focuses on the intimate interaction between the figures, set against a darkened, atmospheric backdrop that suggests a wooded environment.

The Virgin is shown in a traditional red garment, partially draped in a dark mantle, while the infant Christ is rendered with the soft, rounded forms typical of the period. The lighting is directed to draw attention to the central figures, creating a contrast with the shadowy, indistinct foliage behind them. Quellinus employs a technique that balances the physical presence of the subjects with a sense of quietude. The brushwork is controlled, allowing for the subtle modelling of skin tones and the texture of the fabric.

This work belongs to a genre of devotional imagery that was common in the Low Countries during the seventeenth century. It avoids the theatricality found in some contemporary works, opting instead for a more grounded, humanised portrayal of the sacred subjects. The landscape elements, while secondary, provide a sense of depth and context, typical of the period's interest in integrating figures into natural settings. The painting demonstrates the technical proficiency of Quellinus, who was well-regarded for his ability to synthesise the grand manner of his contemporaries with a more restrained, classical approach to composition and form. This print captures the tonal range of the original oil painting, preserving the interplay of light and shadow that defines the work.

You might also like

Madonna, with Child Standing on a Parapet by Giovanni Bellini
Madonna and Child with the Milk Soup by Gerard David

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Madonna-and-Child_Poster_CompositorV1_1792110290890.jpg?v=1792301864
