The composition is characteristic of the Rajput tradition, where the ruler is positioned centrally, elevated by his mount to signify his status among his courtiers and relatives. The figures are rendered in profile, a convention that allows for the clear display of courtly attire, turbans, and weaponry.

The artist, Kushala, employs a flat perspective, typical of the regional style of the period. The background is a solid, pale green, which contrasts with the deep red border framing the scene. The horses are depicted in various states of movement, with the central figure's horse captured in a dynamic, rearing pose. The use of gold leaf adds a decorative quality to the saddles, bridles, and jewellery worn by the riders, reflecting the wealth and ceremonial nature of the Ratlam court.

Textual inscriptions in Devanagari script appear at the top of the painting, providing identification for the figures and the context of the event. These inscriptions are integrated into the design, serving both as a record and as a graphic element. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the interplay between the earthy tones of the horses, the white of the garments, and the bold red of the border. This piece offers a view into the visual culture of 19th-century Rajasthan, where painting served to document the hierarchy and activities of the princely states. The attention to detail in the textiles and the specific postures of the horses suggests a high degree of observation by the artist, who was active during the early years of Balwant Singh's reign.

You might also like

Portrait of Maharaja Pratap Singh by Sahib Ram
Maharana Amar Singh II Riding a Jodhpur Horse by Stipple Master

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Maharaja-Balwant-Singh-of-Ratlam-in-Procession-with-His-Relatives-and-Courtiers_Poster_CompositorV1_1791934992688.jpg?v=1791944994
https://www.solisprints.com/products/maharaja-balwant-singh-of-ratlam-in-procession-with-his-relatives-and-courtiers-kushala
