The subject, Malle Babbe, is a figure famously associated with the work of Frans Hals. Van Meegeren adopts the loose, energetic brushwork characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age to capture the subject's boisterous expression. The woman is depicted with a wide grin, holding a pewter tankard, her face illuminated against a dark, moody background. The ruff collar and white cap are rendered with quick, confident strokes that suggest the texture of the fabric without excessive detail.

Van Meegeren spent much of his career perfecting the methods of the old masters, using specific pigments and binders to replicate the appearance of aged oil paintings. This particular piece displays his ability to channel the spirit of seventeenth-century genre painting. The composition focuses on the immediacy of the subject's personality, prioritising the raw emotion of the scene over formal precision. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, with the metallic sheen of the tankard providing a contrast to the soft, worn appearance of the woman's clothing. This print offers a view into the technical skill of a painter who operated in the shadow of history, creating works that blurred the lines between historical homage and original production. It is a study of character, capturing a moment of revelry with a directness that remains effective in a contemporary setting.

You might also like

Malle Babbe by Louis Bernard Coclers
Buste van een man met een hoed by Dirk van der Toorn
Han van Meegeren artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Malle-Babbe_Poster_CompositorV1_1792115243889.jpg?v=1792136470
