The subject is shown with a characteristic grin, her head turned slightly to the side, while an owl rests upon her shoulder. The composition draws heavily upon the iconography established by Frans Hals, whose painting of the same subject remains a primary reference for this figure in Dutch art history.

Coclers employs a dense network of cross-hatching to define the form and texture of the subject's clothing and the surrounding space. The lines are applied with precision, creating a sense of volume in the ruff collar and the folds of the bodice. The background is rendered in dark, atmospheric tones, which pushes the figure forward and focuses the viewer's attention on the facial expression and the presence of the owl. The artist captures a specific moment of animation, balancing the rough characterisation of the subject with the technical demands of the etching medium.

As a Dutch artist working in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Coclers often looked back to the masters of the previous century for inspiration. This work functions as a study of character and historical type, reflecting an interest in the genre traditions of the Netherlands. The print demonstrates a high degree of control over the etching needle, particularly in the way light is suggested through the variation of line density. It is a piece that engages with the history of Dutch portraiture, offering a refined interpretation of a well-known, somewhat enigmatic figure from the past.

You might also like

Untitled (Two Soldiers on Horseback, Etching) - Fine Art Print — Unknown Artist
Gezicht op Beverwijk - Abraham Rademaker — Abraham Rademaker

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Malle-Babbe_Poster_CompositorV1_1791881333975.jpg?v=1791881696
