The composition adopts a clinical, instructional aesthetic, reminiscent of a diagram or a do-it-yourself assembly kit. By removing the facial features of the subject and placing them in a vertical column to the right, D'Arcangelo transforms a recognisable cultural figure into a series of detached, interchangeable components. The use of flat, unmodulated colour and hard-edged lines aligns with the broader Pop Art movement, which frequently appropriated commercial imagery and mass-media techniques.

The work functions as a critique of the commodification of celebrity. The presence of a pair of scissors at the bottom of the vertical strip suggests a literal cutting out of parts, reinforcing the idea of the subject as a construct rather than a person. The letters A, B, C, and D serve as markers for assembly, further dehumanising the figure by reducing her identity to a set of instructions. D'Arcangelo employs a palette of bright, synthetic tones that echo the artificiality of the film industry and the advertising world of the 1960s. The contrast between the blue background and the pale skin tones creates a stark, graphic quality that draws attention to the artificial nature of the image. This piece remains a significant example of how artists of the era engaged with the pervasive influence of celebrity culture, using the language of commercial design to deconstruct the myths surrounding public figures. It invites the viewer to consider the mechanics behind the construction of fame and the ease with which an individual is reduced to a collection of consumable parts.

You might also like

Les Demoiselles d'Avignon vues de derrière by Patrick Caulfield
Nude on Beach by Roy Lichtenstein

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Marilyn_Poster_CompositorV1_1792116500340.jpg?v=1792138178
