Edgar Degas, a close friend and colleague, captures her in a moment of quiet observation. The composition is notable for its vertical orientation and the unconventional framing, which reflects the influence of Japanese woodblock prints on Degas. Cassatt is shown from behind, her figure silhouetted against the gallery wall, holding a guidebook and an umbrella. The use of aquatint creates deep, atmospheric shadows that define the space and the texture of her clothing.

Degas experimented extensively with printmaking techniques during this period. He often layered etching, drypoint, and aquatint to achieve varied tonal effects. In this print, the contrast between the dark, heavy forms of the figure and the lighter, suggested details of the gallery walls creates a sense of depth. The parquet floor is rendered with precise, angled lines that draw the eye into the scene. By focusing on the act of looking, Degas examines the relationship between the viewer and the art object. The print remains a significant example of his technical skill and his interest in the private lives of his contemporaries within public spaces. It avoids the polished finish of academic art, favouring a more immediate and experimental approach to the medium.

You might also like

Portrait of the Artist's Mother by Mary Cassatt
Claire Campbell by Édouard Manet
Edgar Degas artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Mary-Cassatt-at-the-Louvre_-The-Paintings-Gallery_Poster_CompositorV1_1792121426607.jpg?v=1792204166
