The composition focuses on a group of children gathered around a maypole, their figures rendered with the artist's characteristic shorthand style. Rather than aiming for photographic precision, Prendergast employs dabs of colour and fluid brushwork to suggest the movement and energy of the crowd. The figures are grouped in a decorative arrangement across the grassy expanse, creating a sense of rhythmic activity.

Prendergast spent time in Europe during the 1890s, where he absorbed the influence of post-impressionist painters such as Paul Cézanne and the Nabis. This exposure encouraged him to move away from traditional academic realism. In this work, the application of paint is light and airy, allowing the paper to show through in areas, which contributes to the overall luminosity of the scene. The palette consists of soft greens, muted pinks, and blues, which unify the various elements of the composition.

The maypole serves as the central vertical element, providing structure to the otherwise loose arrangement of figures. Prendergast often depicted public leisure activities, finding interest in the patterns formed by crowds in parks and seaside resorts. His approach to the subject is observational, yet filtered through a personal aesthetic that prioritises colour harmony and surface texture over narrative detail. This piece reflects his ability to transform a mundane urban event into a decorative arrangement of form and tone. The work remains a clear example of his transition toward a more modern, flattened pictorial space, which would define his later output in oil paint.

You might also like

Winter, Central Park by Childe Hassam
Skating on the Ladies' Skating Pond in Central Park, New York by Winslow Homer
Maurice Prendergast prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/May-Day-Central-Park_Poster_CompositorV1_1792305125617.jpg?v=1792398018
