The image documents the daily activity of individuals navigating the narrow, stepped thoroughfares of the historic district. The composition focuses on the physical exertion of the figures, who carry goods balanced upon their heads, a common method of transport in the urban environment of the period.

Gervais-Courtellemont was a French photographer known for his extensive travels through North Africa and the Middle East. His work often sought to record the architectural character and social customs of the regions he visited. This particular print, presented here as a museum-grade reproduction, offers a glimpse into the spatial configuration of the Casbah, with its high walls and shadowed passages. The play of light and shade across the stone surfaces provides a sense of the atmospheric conditions typical of the Mediterranean climate.

As a historical document, the photograph provides evidence of the urban fabric of Algiers at the turn of the twentieth century. The figures are depicted in motion, their presence providing scale to the surrounding structures. The technical quality of the original negative allows for a clear rendering of the textures of the clothing and the masonry. This print is suitable for those interested in the history of photography, the documentation of North African urban life, and the visual records produced by European travellers during the colonial era. The image is presented with a focus on clarity and historical accuracy, maintaining the original composition and tonal range of the source material.

You might also like

Officieren en straat in kamp by Dick W.B. van Maarseveen
Omslag van het boek 'Amsterdam?' by Ed van der Elsken

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Mensen-dragen-spullen-op-het-hoofd-in-een-straat-in-de-kasba-van-Algiers-Algerije_Poster_CompositorV1_1791878089875.jpg?v=1791878334
https://www.solisprints.com/products/mensen-dragen-spullen-op-het-hoofd-in-een-straat-in-de-kasba-van-algiers-algerije-jules-gervais-courtellemont
