mignonne-allons-voir-si-la-rose-paul-serusier
Mignonne, allons voir si la rose - Paul Sérusier

A symbolic work by Paul Sérusier, inspired by Ronsard's poetry, featuring simplified figures and a golden, pointillist-inspired colour palette.

Paul Sérusier, a member of the Nabis group, painted this work during his later period, when his focus shifted toward decorative synthesis and symbolic themes. The title references the famous poem by Pierre de Ronsard, which explores the fleeting nature of youth and beauty. Sérusier translates this literary concept into a visual form through a flattened, rhythmic composition.

The figures are rendered with simplified forms, their presence integrated into the surrounding environment through a consistent application of colour and texture. The palette relies on warm, golden tones that suggest a sun-drenched atmosphere, contrasting with the cooler, muted greens of the foliage. Sérusier employs a pointillist-influenced technique, applying paint in small, distinct touches that create a shimmering surface across the canvas. This method avoids traditional modelling, opting instead for a decorative arrangement of colour patches that define the subjects.

Unlike his earlier, more radical experiments in pure colour, this work demonstrates a return to a more structured, almost archaic style. The figures appear contemplative, their gestures restrained as they interact with the rose. The background, composed of undulating hills and golden light, provides a sense of enclosure. This painting reflects the artist's interest in theosophy and his desire to find a universal language of form that could convey spiritual or poetic truths. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Sérusier directs the viewer toward the essential mood of the scene, prioritising the emotional resonance of the colour harmony over realistic representation.

You might also like

Title Page for Amour by Maurice Denis
Boatwomen in Brittany by Georges Lacombe
Paul Sérusier prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Mignonne-allons-voir-si-la-rose_Poster_CompositorV1_1792125580628.jpg?v=1792296134
