This work, Modular Painting with Four Panels, #6, consists of four individual canvases arranged to form a larger square. The composition relies on a rigid grid system, where geometric shapes, such as arcs and diagonal bands, repeat across the surface to create a sense of mechanical order.

The visual language here is characteristic of Lichtenstein's mature style. He employs his signature Ben-Day dots, a technique borrowed from commercial printing processes, to provide texture and shading within the flat planes of colour. The palette is restrained, focusing on deep greens, muted blues, and stark whites, which contrasts with the bold black outlines defining each shape. By using these industrial-looking elements, Lichtenstein questions the distinction between fine art and mass-produced graphics.

Each panel is designed to be interchangeable, reflecting the artist's interest in the concept of modularity and the potential for infinite variation within a set system. The work lacks a traditional centre or narrative focus, instead inviting the viewer to observe the rhythm of the repeating patterns. The precision of the lines and the flatness of the application remove the presence of the artist's hand, aligning the piece with the aesthetic of mid-century industrial design. This series represents a shift toward a more analytical approach to painting, where the structure of the image becomes the primary subject matter. The work remains a clear example of how Lichtenstein applied the techniques of commercial illustration to the realm of abstract art, maintaining a cool, detached perspective throughout his career.

You might also like

Spatial Structure by Tihamér Gyarmathy
Red Nuclear by Max Bill
Roy Lichtenstein prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Modular-Painting-with-Four-Panels-6_Poster_CompositorV1_1792125596940.jpg?v=1792296552
