moon-of-the-festival-of-the-dead-bon-no-tsuki-kitoku
Moon of the Festival of the Dead (Bon no tsuki) - Kitoku

A traditional Japanese woodblock print by Kitoku depicting a quiet domestic scene during the Bon Festival, rendered with delicate lines and soft colours.

This woodblock print by the artist Kitoku captures a quiet, domestic scene associated with the Bon Festival, a period in Japan dedicated to honouring the spirits of ancestors. The composition depicts three figures gathered in a traditional interior, their postures relaxed as they engage in conversation or study. The artist employs a minimalist approach, using thin, expressive lines to define the forms of the individuals and the sparse furnishings of the room.

The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft washes of blue, pale green, and muted grey to provide subtle tonal variation without overwhelming the simplicity of the design. A wall-mounted clock is visible in the background, a detail that anchors the scene in a specific domestic setting while contrasting with the traditional attire of the figures. The figures are rendered with a focus on gesture and character, reflecting the observational nature of Ukiyo-e genre prints.

Kitoku utilises the negative space of the paper effectively, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the three subjects. The print avoids excessive ornamentation, favouring a clean, balanced arrangement that draws attention to the human element. The red seal of the artist is clearly visible on the left side, providing a point of visual interest against the neutral background. This work offers a glimpse into the daily life and cultural observances of the period, presented with a clarity that is characteristic of the woodblock medium. The print is an example of the narrative quality found in Japanese graphic arts, where small, everyday moments are elevated through careful composition and a disciplined use of colour.

You might also like

Ladies Surrounding a Cart - Utamaro II — Utamaro II
A Party of Merrymakers in a House in the Yoshiwara on a Moonlight Night - Kitagawa Utamaro — Kitagawa Utamaro

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Moon-of-the-Festival-of-the-Dead-Bon-no-tsuki-_Poster_CompositorV1_1791530793088.jpg?v=1791531422
