The composition is structured around a clear division between the authority figure of Moses, positioned on the left behind a simple wooden table, and the group of listeners gathered on the right. Moses is shown with traditional iconography, including horns, gesturing towards the laws he presents to the assembly. The architectural setting, defined by rounded arches and a classical column, provides a sense of order to the scene.

Specklin employs a linear approach typical of sixteenth-century German printmaking. The hatching techniques create volume within the drapery of the garments and define the shadows beneath the table. The figures are rendered with a focus on narrative clarity rather than anatomical precision, reflecting the didactic purpose of such illustrations in the period. The floor tiles and the distant, simplified mountain range visible through the archway establish a basic sense of spatial depth. This work demonstrates the technical conventions of the woodcut medium, where the artist relies on the contrast between black ink and the white paper surface to delineate form and texture. The print serves as a visual record of the period's approach to religious storytelling, prioritising the legibility of the subject matter for a contemporary audience. The clean lines and balanced arrangement of the figures ensure that the focus remains on the interaction between the teacher and his audience, capturing a moment of instruction and communal learning.

You might also like

Gezicht op de Thermen van Diocletianus - Hieronymus Cock — Hieronymus Cock
Christ Taking Leave of His Mother - Cornelis Engebrechtsz. — Cornelis Engebrechtsz.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Moses-Teaching-the-Laws-to-the-Israelites_Poster_CompositorV1_1786367044669.jpg?v=1791856491
