Executed in pastel, the work displays the artist's early engagement with Divisionist techniques, where light and form are constructed through layered, hatched strokes. The composition focuses on the figures seated at a table, with the mother positioned behind the child, who occupies a high chair.

Boccioni employs a soft, atmospheric quality to the scene. The mother's expression is composed and direct, while the child looks towards the viewer with a sense of curiosity. The background features a suggestion of foliage, rendered with the same textured, linear mark-making that defines the figures. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on warm ochres, muted greys, and soft whites to create a sense of intimacy.

Before his transition into the dynamic, fragmented style of Futurism, Boccioni produced several works that explored the human figure within private settings. This piece reflects his technical proficiency in drawing and his interest in the psychological presence of his subjects. The use of pastel allows for a delicate blending of tones, which softens the contours of the faces and clothing. The light source appears to emanate from the left, casting gentle shadows across the table and the figures. This work provides a view into the artist's formative period, showing his ability to balance observational accuracy with a personal, expressive touch. It remains a representative example of his pre-Futurist output, where the focus was on capturing the quiet reality of everyday life rather than the speed and mechanical energy that would later define his career.

You might also like

Elisabeth Gerhard Sewing by August Macke
Young Mother Sewing by Mary Cassatt
Umberto Boccioni artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Mother-and-Child_Poster_CompositorV1_1792127591612.jpg?v=1792293929
