The work depicts the sitter seated in a woodland setting, a hallmark of Gainsborough's approach to portraiture where the subject is integrated into a natural environment. Her pose is relaxed, with her hands resting gently in her lap, and her gaze is directed towards the viewer with a calm expression.

Gainsborough employs his characteristic feathery brushwork, particularly in the treatment of the foliage and the sitter's dress. The colour palette is dominated by muted earth tones, soft pinks, and deep greens, which create a sense of atmospheric unity. The light appears to filter through the trees, casting soft shadows across the figure and the surrounding ground. This technique allows the artist to focus on the textures of the fabric and the soft features of the sitter's face, rather than rigid anatomical precision.

The portrait captures the fashion of the late eighteenth century, with the sitter wearing a simple, flowing gown that reflects the period's preference for a more natural appearance compared to the formal attire of earlier decades. The background, while suggestive of a specific location, remains generalised, serving to frame the sitter rather than document a particular place. This work is held in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. It remains a representative example of Gainsborough's ability to combine portraiture with his interest in natural subjects, demonstrating his technical skill in handling oil paint to achieve a light, airy quality that defines his later career.

You might also like

Thomas and Martha Neate with His Tutor, Thomas Needham by Sir Joshua Reynolds
The Last Hour of the Baroness de Rebecque by Augustin de Saint-Aubin

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Mrs_Poster_CompositorV1_1792124340611.jpg?v=1792211705
