Le Corbusier, alongside Amédée Ozenfant, developed this aesthetic to reject the fragmentation of Cubism in favour of clear, rational forms. The composition organises everyday objects into a balanced, architectural arrangement. A cooking pot, a knife, and a meat chopper are rendered with precise, clean lines and a controlled palette.

The work demonstrates the artist's interest in the relationship between industrial design and fine art. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Le Corbusier focuses on the essential geometry of the objects. The flat planes of colour and the deliberate placement of items suggest a sense of order and stability. The shadows are not merely functional but act as structural elements that define the space within the frame.

This painting reflects the broader principles of the Purist manifesto, which advocated for a return to universal, legible forms. The objects are presented as archetypes rather than specific, personal items. The inclusion of the meat chopper, or hachoir, provides a sharp, linear contrast to the rounded forms of the vessel. Through this careful selection and arrangement, the artist creates a visual language that prioritises clarity and harmony. The work remains a clear example of how the principles of architectural design influenced the painterly practice of the period. It avoids the decorative excesses of earlier movements, opting instead for a disciplined approach to composition and colour. The result is a work that feels both modern and timeless, grounded in the logic of its own construction.

You might also like

Lamp by Juan Gris
Still Life by Lee Krasner

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Nature-morte-au-hachoir_Poster_CompositorV1_1792108732449.jpg?v=1792132763
