The composition is defined by the contrast between the pale pink blossoms and the sharp, dark green foliage. Van Gogh applied paint with his characteristic impasto technique, creating a textured surface that directs the eye across the canvas.

The background is a flat, lime-green wash that pushes the subject forward, removing traditional depth and focusing attention on the objects themselves. The table surface is rendered in shades of lilac and violet, providing a complementary colour balance to the yellow-green wall. The books, one of which is identifiable as a novel by Émile Zola, add a personal dimension to the scene. Van Gogh often included literature in his paintings to represent his intellectual interests and his connection to contemporary French culture.

This painting demonstrates the artist's interest in colour theory and the influence of Japanese woodblock prints, particularly in the flattened perspective and the bold outlines of the jug. The brushwork is rhythmic and deliberate, showing the artist's focus on capturing the energy of the flowers rather than a photographic representation. The choice of oleanders, a plant known for its toxicity, adds a layer of complexity to the work, as Van Gogh often found beauty in subjects that carried dual meanings. The painting remains a clear example of his period in the south of France, where his palette became brighter and his application of paint more expressive. The work is currently held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

You might also like

Still Life with Flowers by Victor Borisov-Musatov
Flowers by Frédéric Bazille
Vincent van Gogh prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Oleanders-and-Books_Poster_CompositorV1_1791957700097.jpg?v=1791959949
