During this period, Picasso moved away from the radical fragmentation of Cubism, adopting a more restrained, classical approach. This shift was influenced by his travels in Italy and his exposure to Renaissance art, as well as his life with Khokhlova, who preferred a more traditional aesthetic.

In this work, Picasso captures his subject wearing a traditional Spanish mantilla, a lace veil draped over a high comb. The composition is formal and balanced, focusing on the sitter's steady gaze and the texture of the lace. The palette is muted, relying on soft creams, whites, and subtle shadows to define the form. The attention to detail in the lace pattern demonstrates a technical precision that contrasts with his earlier, more experimental works. The background remains simple, ensuring the viewer's attention stays on the subject's face and the delicate fabric of her attire.

This portrait belongs to a series of works from the late 1910s that reflect Picasso's engagement with Ingres and other classical masters. It is a study of character and costume, rendered with a calm, deliberate hand. The painting provides a glimpse into the domestic life of the artist during a period of personal and stylistic transition. By choosing a subject rooted in Spanish tradition, Picasso explores his own heritage through the lens of his wife's presence. The work remains a clear example of his ability to adapt his technique to suit different subjects and moods, moving between the avant-garde and the traditional with ease.

You might also like

Polly Kane by Childe Hassam
Young Woman with a Turban by Jacques-Louis David
More by Pablo Picasso →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Olga-in-a-Mantilla_Poster_CompositorV1_1792125077702.jpg?v=1792296606
