oxford-john-walker
Oxford - John Walker

A detailed 1792 copperplate engraving of Oxford, featuring a pastoral river scene and the city skyline, published in The Copperplate Magazine.

This copperplate engraving, titled Oxford, originates from the first volume of The Copperplate Magazine, published in 1792. The work reflects the late eighteenth-century British interest in topographical documentation and the picturesque tradition. John Walker, acting as both publisher and engraver, produced these plates to provide a visual record of British towns and country seats for a growing audience of collectors and travellers.

The composition follows the conventions of the period, employing a foreground populated by figures engaged in leisure activities by the water. This human element provides a sense of scale and domesticity against the backdrop of the city. The middle ground opens into a pastoral expanse, leading the eye toward the distant spires and towers of Oxford. The artist uses fine, controlled lines to render the textures of the foliage, the ripples of the river, and the architectural details of the city skyline. The sky is treated with delicate cross-hatching to suggest atmospheric depth and light.

Technically, the print demonstrates the precision required for copperplate engraving, a process that allowed for the reproduction of fine detail necessary for topographical accuracy. The inscription at the base confirms the publication details, noting the address at No. 16 Rosoman Street, London. Such prints were often collected and bound into volumes, serving as a portable gallery of the British Isles. This specific impression retains the character of the original paper, showing the plate mark and the surrounding margins typical of eighteenth-century book production. It offers a view of Oxford as it appeared at the end of the Georgian era, capturing a moment of quiet urban and rural coexistence before the industrial changes of the following century.

You might also like

Gezicht op het Abdijplein te Middelburg by Jan Caspar Philips
Gezicht op de Montelbaanstoren by Carel Frederik Bendorp (I)
John Walker prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Oxford_Poster_CompositorV1_1792117100426.jpg?v=1792396745
