A woman kneels on a tatami mat, carefully applying ink to the eyes of a small rabbit sculpted from snow. A child stands beside her, holding the tray that supports the snow figure, while a second woman stands nearby, observing the process. The presence of a shamisen leaning against the wall suggests a setting within a refined household.

The composition balances the figures against a snowy exterior visible through the open sliding doors. Koryūsai employs a muted palette, allowing the red of the child's kimono and the woman's collar to provide visual contrast against the soft greens and greys of the interior. The snow-covered branches outside provide a seasonal context, reinforcing the ephemeral nature of the snow rabbit itself.

Koryūsai, a former samurai who transitioned to professional printmaking, is known for his mastery of the hashira-e (pillar print) format and his depictions of bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women). This painting demonstrates his ability to render domestic life with precision and grace. The lines are controlled and deliberate, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the focus remains on the harmony between the human subjects and their immediate environment. The work reflects the cultural practice of creating snow sculptures, a popular winter pastime in Edo-period Japan. The attention to the textures of the silk, the patterns on the kimonos, and the subtle expressions of the figures reveals the technical skill involved in producing such genre scenes for the urban merchant class of the time.

You might also like

Jo and Uba of Takasago Looking at the Rising Sun - Totoya Hokkei — Totoya Hokkei
Frolicking Figures and Animals - Kawanabe Kyōsai — Kawanabe Kyōsai

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Painting-the-Eyes-on-a-Snow-Rabbit_Poster_CompositorV1_1790808042473.jpg?v=1790809394
