Frankenthaler is widely recognised for her soak-stain technique, where thinned paint is applied to unprimed canvas, allowing the pigment to merge with the fabric fibres. This print translates that fluid, atmospheric quality into the medium of lithography.

The composition is defined by a large, central block of ochre, which exhibits a mottled, organic texture reminiscent of her painted works. The edges of this form appear soft and permeable, suggesting the absorption of ink into the paper. Above this ochre mass sits a sharp, horizontal bar of dark charcoal, providing a structural counterpoint to the fluidity below. A single, gestural stroke of blue ink rests near the bottom, grounding the composition and introducing a secondary hue that contrasts with the warm, earthy tones of the main field.

Frankenthaler's work often avoids literal representation, yet the title Persian Garden invites the viewer to consider the piece as an abstracted interpretation of a space or memory. The interplay between the rigid, geometric bar and the loose, bleeding edges of the ochre form creates a tension between order and spontaneity. By limiting the palette to these specific tones, the artist directs attention to the physical properties of the ink and the texture of the paper. This print captures a moment in the mid-1960s when Frankenthaler was actively pushing the boundaries of print media, treating the stone or plate with the same freedom she applied to her large-scale canvases. The result is a work that balances graphic clarity with the subtle, unpredictable qualities of liquid colour.

You might also like

Sail I by Sam Francis
Blue Over Red by Mark Rothko
More by Helen Frankenthaler →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Persian-Garden_Poster_CompositorV1_1792123134930.jpg?v=1792288874
