The composition features a pair of pheasants perched upon a rocky outcrop, positioned near a flowing stream. Above them, a gnarled tree branch extends across the frame, laden with foliage and blossoms. The artist employs a balanced arrangement, typical of the period's interest in nature as a subject for decorative screens and hanging scrolls.

The Kano school was known for its ability to bridge the gap between the monochrome ink traditions of earlier eras and the more decorative, colour-based styles that gained popularity among the warrior class. In this piece, the use of colour is restrained, allowing the ink-drawn contours of the rocks and tree bark to provide structure. The pheasants are rendered with attention to their plumage, while the surrounding elements suggest a seasonal transition. The silk support provides a subtle texture that complements the application of mineral pigments and ink.

Kano Shōei, the son of Kano Motonobu, maintained the technical standards of his family workshop while adapting to the changing tastes of his patrons. This painting reflects the school's focus on clarity of form and the integration of natural motifs into a cohesive visual narrative. The work is a representative example of the bird-and-flower genre, which held a place in the artistic output of the Kano lineage for generations. The composition avoids excessive clutter, focusing instead on the interaction between the avian subjects and their immediate environment. The muted tones of the background serve to draw attention to the central figures, ensuring the viewer engages with the specific details of the birds and the flora.

You might also like

Herd Boy with Ox - Kano Masanobu — Kanō Masanobu
Prunus - Kano Einō — Kanō Einō

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Pheasants-among-Trees_-Flowers-of-the-Four-Seasons_Poster_CompositorV1_1790837593652.jpg?v=1790838573
