Kashū was a Japanese artist active during the Meiji period, known for his contributions to the kachō-ga genre, which focuses on birds and flowers. This specific composition depicts a raptor perched upon a rock, surrounded by the turbulent motion of crashing waves.

The artist employs a precise, controlled line to define the plumage of the bird, contrasting the soft texture of the feathers with the sharp, jagged forms of the rock and the rhythmic, stylized patterns of the water. The palette remains restrained, relying on muted tones of grey, ochre, and pale blue to maintain a sense of balance. The bird is positioned slightly off-centre, looking back over its shoulder, which creates a sense of alertness and movement within the static frame.

Kachō-ga prints often functioned as both aesthetic objects and educational references for students of art. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy in the upper right corner provides identification for the subject, a common practice in woodblock albums of this era. The technical execution reflects the high standards of Meiji-era woodblock printing, where the carver and printer worked to translate the nuances of the original brushwork into a reproducible format. This work offers a clear example of the traditional Japanese approach to natural history illustration, where observation of the subject is filtered through established stylistic conventions. The composition avoids excessive ornamentation, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the avian subject and the elemental force of the sea.

You might also like

Yokkaichi: Mie River - Utagawa Hiroshige — Utagawa Hiroshige
View of Benten Shrine on Nakanoshima Island in Shinobazu Pond, Ueno Park - Utagawa Hiroshige III — Utagawa Hiroshige III

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Picture-Album-of-Various-Birds-Sh-ch-gafu-_Poster_CompositorV1_1790940556745.jpg?v=1790942338
