The work captures the atmosphere of a public celebration, specifically the French national holiday, through the lens of fragmented geometry and motion. Severini employs a technique influenced by Divisionism, using small, distinct brushstrokes to build form and light. This approach allows the viewer to perceive the energy of the scene rather than a static representation of a street or cafe.

The composition relies on intersecting planes and sharp angles, which are characteristic of the Futurist interest in speed and the mechanical nature of modern life. The inclusion of text, specifically the word CAFE and the number 10, functions as a graphic element that anchors the abstract forms to a recognisable urban setting. These typographic additions were common in the work of artists associated with the Parisian avant-garde, bridging the gap between fine art and commercial signage.

Colour plays a functional role in the painting, with the artist using a palette of primary and secondary tones to create a sense of visual vibration. The green, yellow, and red forms suggest the presence of flags or festive decorations, while the darker, neutral tones provide a structural framework for the composition. By breaking down the subject into these constituent parts, Severini attempts to represent the sensation of being present at the event. The painting demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesise the analytical rigour of Cubism with the dynamic, sensory-focused goals of the Futurist movement. It remains a clear example of how early twentieth-century painters sought to translate the experience of modern urban existence into a new visual language.

You might also like

Dynamism of a Man's Head by Umberto Boccioni
Ritmi di oggetti by Carlo Carrà
Gino Severini artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Plastic-Rhythm-of-the-14th-of-July_Poster_CompositorV1_1792114796630.jpg?v=1792135576
