This work depicts Princess Nawal Toussoun, a figure of mid-twentieth-century society. Fini avoids the conventional rigidity often found in formal portraiture, opting instead for an atmospheric quality that suggests a psychological depth beyond the surface appearance of the sitter.

The composition is structured around the central figure, who holds a long-haired cat. The inclusion of the animal is a recurring motif in Fini's oeuvre, often serving to bridge the gap between the human subject and the animal world. The Princess is rendered with a smooth, almost porcelain-like skin tone, contrasted against the dark, moody background. Her expression is composed, yet the gaze directed toward the viewer creates a sense of engagement. The drapery of her garment, rendered in soft, muted tones, provides a tactile quality to the painting, balancing the stillness of the figure.

Fini's technique involves a precise application of paint, allowing for a refined finish that aligns with her interest in the uncanny and the theatrical. The lighting is focused, drawing attention to the features of the Princess and the texture of the cat's fur. This portrait captures the intersection of high society and the artist's own imaginative vision. It remains a representative example of Fini's ability to imbue traditional portrait formats with her unique, dream-like sensibility. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, relying on the interplay of light, shadow, and the relationship between the subject and her companion to define the mood.

You might also like

Ann by Prudence Heward
Lady in an Evening Dress by Lilla Cabot Perry

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-de-la-Princesse-Nawal-Toussoun_Poster_CompositorV1_1792121098160.jpg?v=1792202869
