portrait-of-a-vietnamese-boy-le-pho
Portrait of a Vietnamese Boy - Le Pho

A delicate portrait of a young boy in a conical hat, rendered in ink and colour on silk by the Vietnamese master Le Pho.

Le Pho, a graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine, occupies a specific position in the history of twentieth-century art. His practice often synthesises traditional East Asian techniques with Western compositional sensibilities. This portrait demonstrates his characteristic approach to silk painting, a medium that requires precision and foresight due to the permanent nature of the ink application.

The subject, a young boy, wears a traditional conical hat, which casts a soft shadow across his face. His expression is neutral, rendered with delicate, controlled brushwork. The background consists of bamboo stalks, executed with fluid, calligraphic strokes that suggest movement without overwhelming the central figure. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on muted greens, ochres, and soft browns to maintain a sense of harmony.

Le Pho frequently returned to themes of childhood and rural life, often imbuing his subjects with a quiet, contemplative quality. The use of silk as a support provides a unique texture, allowing the pigments to settle into the fibres rather than sitting on the surface. This creates a soft, diffused appearance that is difficult to replicate with other materials. The composition is balanced, with the vertical lines of the bamboo providing a counterpoint to the rounded shape of the hat and the boy's features. This work reflects the artist's ability to capture a moment of stillness, drawing upon his training in Hanoi and his subsequent career in France. The inclusion of his signature and seal in the lower left corner confirms the work as an authentic example of his output during his period of stylistic development.

You might also like

Portrait of a Lady by Kano Tanbi
Imaginary Portraits of Famous Poets by Kanō Shōun
Le Pho prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-a-Vietnamese-Boy_Poster_CompositorV1_1792003991196.jpg?v=1792130631
