Dante Gabriel Rossetti produced this work in 1870, employing his characteristic use of chalk to capture the sitter. The drawing reflects the aesthetic preferences of the period, focusing on the soft modelling of the face and the specific arrangement of the hair, which was a common feature in Rossetti's studies of women.

Rossetti often favoured a three-quarter profile for his portrait subjects, allowing for a gentle turn of the neck and a contemplative expression. The technique here relies on subtle gradations of tone rather than harsh outlines. The artist uses the texture of the paper to provide a warmth to the skin tones, while the delicate handling of the chalk creates a sense of softness in the features. The sitter is shown with a slight downward gaze, a pose that suggests introspection and quietude. The clothing is rendered with minimal detail, ensuring that the focus remains entirely on the facial structure and the expression of the subject.

As a central figure in the Pre-Raphaelite movement, Rossetti frequently moved away from the rigid academic styles of his contemporaries. His works from this decade often demonstrate a preoccupation with beauty and the romanticised depiction of his models. This portrait of Coronio is representative of his later draughtsmanship, where he achieved a high degree of finish through careful layering of chalk. The work remains a clear example of his ability to convey character through a restrained and focused composition, avoiding unnecessary background elements that might distract from the primary subject.

You might also like

Portrait of Dante Gabriel Rossetti by William Holman Hunt
The Coral Necklace by Frederick Sandys

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Aglaia-Coronio_Poster_CompositorV1_1792121729756.jpg?v=1792205366
