Executed by Arnoud van Halen, the work is painted on copper, a medium favoured during the period for its smooth surface and ability to hold fine detail. The oval format is characteristic of small-scale portraiture intended for private collections or personal study.

Pierson is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a loose, informal gown or banyan, which suggests a domestic or scholarly setting. His expression is calm and direct, engaging the viewer with a sense of quiet intellectualism. He holds a small paper or manuscript in his hand, a common iconographic device used to denote the subject's literary or poetic pursuits. The lighting is soft, focusing attention on the face while the background remains in shadow, a technique that draws upon the traditions of seventeenth-century Dutch portraiture.

Arnoud van Halen was a contemporary of Pierson, and this work captures the sitter in his later years. The brushwork is controlled, reflecting the precision often associated with Dutch cabinet paintings. The palette consists of muted earth tones, with the deep plum of the garment providing a subtle contrast to the neutral background and the pale tones of the cravat. This portrait serves as a record of the cultural life in Gouda at the turn of the eighteenth century, documenting the appearance of a man who was both a visual artist and a writer. The preservation of the paint on the copper support allows for a clear view of the artist's technique, particularly in the rendering of the facial features and the texture of the fabric.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Christoffel-Pierson_Poster_CompositorV1_1791882925360.jpg?v=1791883199
