Orlova-Davydova and Her Daughter - Karl Bryullov

A refined 1834 portrait by Karl Bryullov, capturing the Countess Orlova-Davydova and her daughter in a moment of quiet domesticity.

Karl Bryullov, a central figure in nineteenth-century Russian painting, produced this portrait in 1834. It depicts Countess Olga Ivanovna Orlova-Davydova holding her young daughter. The composition reflects the conventions of aristocratic portraiture during the period, balancing formal elegance with a sense of domestic intimacy. Bryullov employs a sophisticated handling of textures, particularly in the rendering of the Countess's dark velvet gown, which contrasts with the soft, pale drapery of the child's clothing.

The background features a heavy, deep-red curtain that frames the subjects, creating a theatrical effect common in the artist's work. To the left, a glimpse of a park setting provides a sense of depth, while a small dog rests at the base of the composition, adding a naturalistic detail to the scene. Bryullov's technique demonstrates his training in the academic tradition, combined with the emotional warmth characteristic of European Romanticism. The interaction between mother and child is captured with a gentle focus, avoiding excessive sentimentality while maintaining a dignified composure.

This work is representative of the high-society portraiture that defined much of Bryullov's career after his return from Italy. His ability to capture the likeness and social standing of his sitters made him a preferred artist among the Russian nobility. The painting remains a clear example of his technical precision and his capacity to manage complex lighting and colour arrangements within a single frame. The interplay of light on the velvet surfaces and the subtle expressions of the sitters demonstrate his command over the medium of oil paint.

You might also like

Portrait of Karl Bryullov - Vasily Tropinin by Vasily Andreevich Tropinin
Portrait of Harriet, Viscountess Duncannon with Her Sons by John Hoppner

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Countess-O.-I_Poster_CompositorV1_1792119723860.jpg?v=1792197862
https://www.solisprints.com/products/portrait-of-countess-o-i-orlova-davydova-and-her-daughter-karl-bryullov
