portrait-of-daruma-fugai-ekun
Portrait of Daruma - Fūgai Ekun

A minimalist ink portrait of the Zen patriarch Bodhidharma, rendered with the spontaneous, expressive brushwork characteristic of the Zenga tradition.

This work depicts Bodhidharma, the semi-legendary monk credited with bringing Zen Buddhism to China. Fūgai Ekun, a Zen monk who lived as a hermit in a cave, is known for his unconventional approach to ink painting. His style rejects the rigid technical standards of professional schools in favour of a direct, spontaneous expression of the Zen spirit.

The composition is minimalist, focusing entirely on the head and shoulders of the figure. The artist uses broad, sweeping brushstrokes to define the robes, while the face is rendered with a combination of delicate lines and darker ink washes. The heavy, arched eyebrows and the intense, wide-eyed gaze capture the legendary ferocity and concentration associated with Daruma. The negative space surrounding the figure is intentional, inviting the viewer to contemplate the void, a central concept in Zen philosophy.

Above the figure, a column of calligraphy provides context and spiritual commentary. The ink work is fluid, demonstrating the artist's mastery of the brush. The paper has aged to a warm, neutral tone, which complements the monochrome ink palette. This piece is a classic example of Zenga, where the act of painting is considered a meditative practice rather than a pursuit of aesthetic perfection. The simplicity of the form serves to strip away distractions, directing attention to the essence of the subject. It is a quiet, contemplative work that reflects the ascetic life of its creator, who spent his later years living in isolation. The print captures the texture of the original ink on paper, preserving the subtle variations in tone and the gestural quality of the brushwork.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Portrait of Daruma - Unkoku Tōgan — Unkoku Tōgan

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Daruma_Poster_CompositorV1_1791528734065.jpg?v=1791529423
