The work is a sophisticated example of Hamilton's interest in the intersection of photography, printmaking, and the manipulation of imagery. By layering photographic elements with graphic interventions, Hamilton creates a visual dialogue that moves beyond traditional portraiture.

The composition features a close-up of Roth, his features rendered with a distinct, slightly distorted quality that suggests the use of photographic layering or multiple exposures. A prominent orange halo is superimposed above his head, introducing a playful, almost ironic element of sanctity to the subject. Behind the figure, a flat, bright green panel contrasts with a more ambiguous, painterly blue background, creating a sense of spatial tension. The inclusion of suspenders and a white shirt grounds the subject in a recognisable, everyday reality, while the surrounding graphic elements push the image into a more conceptual realm.

Hamilton was known for his analytical approach to the visual culture of the mid-twentieth century. In this print, he employs a combination of collotype and screenprint techniques to achieve a specific texture and colour saturation. The work reflects his long-standing engagement with the technical possibilities of the print medium, as well as his personal connection to the avant-garde circles of the period. The portrait captures the intellectual camaraderie between the two artists, presenting Roth not merely as a subject, but as a participant in the creative process. The image remains a clear example of Hamilton's ability to synthesise disparate visual languages into a cohesive, thought-provoking composition.

You might also like

Gabrielle Navarra by Andy Warhol
Stepping Out by Roy Lichtenstein

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Dieter-Roth_Poster_CompositorV1_1792122257215.jpg?v=1792207650
