Executed in 1927, the work demonstrates Wood's ability to capture a subject through minimal, precise line work. The composition is spare, focusing entirely on the figure of Reitlinger, who is shown seated in a chair. Wood employs a clean, continuous line to define the contours of the suit, the facial features, and the posture of the sitter. The lack of shading or background detail directs the viewer's attention to the character of the subject, whose spectacles and moustache are rendered with economy and clarity.

Christopher Wood was a British painter associated with the Seven and Five Society. His work often moved between different stylistic influences, including the primitive and the academic. This portrait, however, reveals a disciplined approach to draughtsmanship. The drawing is signed and dated in the lower right corner, providing a clear record of its creation during a period when Wood was active in the London art scene. The paper tone provides a neutral ground for the blue ink, maintaining a sense of lightness and immediacy. By stripping away extraneous detail, Wood presents a direct observation of his contemporary. The work functions as a study of form and personality, reflecting the artist's interest in the clarity of line that defined much of his graphic output during the late 1920s. It remains a clear example of his technical skill and his connection to the intellectual circles of the time.

You might also like

Madame Derain in Green by André Derain
Chanel (Portrait Sketch) by Jean Cocteau

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Gerald-Reitlinger_Poster_CompositorV1_1792120228817.jpg?v=1792199385
