The portrait is presented within an oval frame, a common convention for seventeenth-century printmaking, which provides a sense of formal structure. The subject is shown in a bust-length view, wearing a ruff collar and armour, reflecting his status as a military leader. The precision of the line work, particularly in the rendering of the facial features and the texture of the metal armour, demonstrates the technical skill required for copperplate engraving during this period.

The surrounding text, inscribed in Latin within the oval border, identifies the sitter and his titles. Below the frame, a Dutch inscription provides further details regarding his role as a general in the Palatinate. The inclusion of a coat of arms at the base of the frame serves to reinforce the identity and social standing of the subject. Lons, who was active in Amsterdam, produced various portraits and topographical prints that document the figures and locations of his time. This work is characteristic of the period, where portrait prints were used to disseminate the likenesses of military and political figures to a wider audience. The composition is balanced and clear, focusing on the sitter while using the surrounding text to provide historical context. The print is an example of the documentary function of engraving in the seventeenth century, capturing the appearance of a contemporary figure with clarity and detail.

You might also like

Portrait of Washington and a View of the Evacuation of New York by the British, November 25, 1783 - Francis Scott King — Francis Scott King
Saint Judas Thadeus - Agostino Carracci — Agostino Carracci

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Hans-Michael-Elias-von-Obentraut_Poster_CompositorV1_1791792074265.jpg?v=1791793704
