This portrait of his wife, Emilienne Dufy, captures his characteristic approach to form and colour. Dufy often separated his line work from his colour application, a technique that allows the ink drawing to exist independently of the washes. In this work, the fluid, calligraphic ink lines define the subject, while the colour is applied with a sense of spontaneity that does not strictly adhere to the outlines.

The composition focuses on the profile of Madame Dufy, her expression calm and contemplative. The artist uses a light, warm tone for the skin, which contrasts with the darker, more gestural strokes of the background. The lace-like pattern of her garment is rendered with quick, rhythmic marks, demonstrating Dufy's ability to suggest texture through minimal means. His background treatment, consisting of sweeping blue and grey strokes, provides a sense of atmosphere without distracting from the sitter.

Dufy's work often reflects a lightness of touch, even in portraiture. By avoiding heavy shading or rigid anatomical precision, he captures the essence of the subject through gesture and rhythm. This piece is representative of his mature period, where his confidence in line and economy of means reached a high level of clarity. The work remains an example of how he balanced decorative elements with a direct, observational approach to his subjects. It is a study in movement and light, typical of the artist's output during the interwar years.

You might also like

Nude's Back by Henri Matisse
A Woman's Portrait by Kees van Dongen

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Madame-Dufy_Poster_CompositorV1_1792117896774.jpg?v=1792141333
