portrait-of-maurice-andy-warhol
Portrait of Maurice - Andy Warhol

A striking screenprint by Andy Warhol featuring his pet dachshund, Maurice, rendered in bold, non-naturalistic colours.

This screenprint depicts Maurice, the dachshund belonging to Andy Warhol. Warhol maintained a long-standing affection for the breed, often bringing his dogs to the studio and incorporating them into his artistic practice. The work utilises the characteristic screenprinting technique that defined much of Warhol's output during the 1970s. By applying layers of high-contrast colour, the artist transforms a simple photographic source into a graphic composition.

The image relies on a flattened perspective, typical of the Pop Art movement. The subject is centred, with the dog's features rendered through bold colour blocks rather than traditional shading. The palette consists of synthetic, non-naturalistic tones, including electric blues and bright pinks, which create a sense of visual tension against the background. The outlines are simplified, focusing on the silhouette and the recognisable shape of the dachshund's ears and snout.

Warhol's approach to portraiture often involved the removal of the artist's hand, favouring mechanical reproduction methods. This print reflects his interest in the serial nature of imagery, where the subject becomes an icon through repetition and colour variation. The work captures the playful yet detached quality present in many of his animal studies. It remains a clear example of his ability to elevate everyday subjects into the realm of fine art through deliberate stylistic choices. The composition is balanced, allowing the subject to occupy the frame fully without the distraction of environmental detail. This print provides a direct look into the personal life of the artist, while maintaining the aesthetic distance that characterises his broader body of work.

You might also like

Girl with Pearl by Marjorie Strider
Stepping Out by Roy Lichtenstein
Andy Warhol artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Maurice_Poster_CompositorV1_1792121153424.jpg?v=1792203310
