portrait-of-myself-and-my-imaginary-wife-arshile-gorky
Portrait of Myself and My Imaginary Wife - Arshile Gorky

An early, contemplative portrait by Arshile Gorky, featuring two figures rendered in thick, expressive brushwork against a muted ochre background.

Painted in 1923, this early work by Arshile Gorky offers a glimpse into the formative years of an artist who would later become a figurehead of American abstraction. The composition features two figures set against a muted, ochre-toned background. The male figure, positioned on the left, tilts his head downward with a contemplative expression, while the female figure on the right gazes slightly away. The paint application is thick and tactile, revealing the artist's early interest in the physical properties of the medium.

This piece reflects the influence of European modernism on Gorky's early practice. The simplified forms and the focus on emotional resonance over strict anatomical accuracy suggest a departure from traditional portraiture. The artist employs a limited palette, relying on variations of brown, cream, and dark tones to define the features of the subjects. The brushwork is deliberate, creating a sense of weight and presence within the small frame of the board.

As a study in identity and imagination, the work captures a period of transition for Gorky. He was navigating his own history as an Armenian immigrant while absorbing the visual language of the Western art canon. The title itself introduces a layer of narrative ambiguity, suggesting that the figures are not merely representations of individuals, but projections of the artist's internal state. This painting provides a look at the roots of Gorky's visual vocabulary, which would eventually shift toward the fluid, organic forms of his later surrealist-influenced works. The directness of the gaze and the sombre mood remain consistent elements throughout his career, even as his style moved further away from figurative representation.

<div
