portrait-of-pablo-picasso-juan-gris
Portrait of Pablo Picasso - Juan Gris

A seminal 1912 Cubist portrait by Juan Gris, depicting Pablo Picasso through a series of geometric planes and a muted, sophisticated colour palette.

Painted in 1912, this work represents a significant moment in the development of Analytical Cubism. Juan Gris, a close associate of Pablo Picasso in Paris, applied the rigorous geometric principles of the movement to the likeness of his friend. The composition breaks the subject into a series of interlocking planes, facets, and angular forms, which effectively flatten the pictorial space while maintaining the recognisable features of the sitter.

The palette is restrained, relying on a sequence of ochres, greys, and muted blues. This choice of colour allows the viewer to focus on the structural arrangement of the forms rather than atmospheric effects. The light source is multiple and shifting, a characteristic technique of the period that denies traditional modelling in favour of a fragmented, intellectualised approach to representation. Picasso is depicted with a sense of quiet intensity, his features merged with the surrounding environment through the repetition of sharp, diagonal lines.

Unlike the earlier, more hermetic works of Georges Braque or Picasso, this portrait retains a degree of clarity in its construction. Gris demonstrates his methodical approach to painting, where the canvas is built up through a logical sequence of geometric reductions. The work remains a primary example of how the Cubist idiom was adapted to portraiture, transforming a human subject into a complex architectural arrangement. It captures the collaborative spirit of the Bateau-Lavoir circle, where artists sought to redefine the relationship between the object, the viewer, and the canvas surface. This print reproduces the original oil painting, preserving the subtle tonal shifts and the precise, calculated brushwork that define Gris's contribution to early twentieth-century modernism.

You might also like

Head of a man by Pablo Picasso
Portrait of Picasso by Salvador Dalí
More by Juan Gris →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Pablo-Picasso_Poster_CompositorV1_1792129474230.jpg?v=1792293579
