The work is a formal portrait, presented within an oval frame, a common convention for seventeenth-century Dutch prints. The subject is shown in bust-length, wearing the traditional clerical attire of the period, including a stiff, pleated ruff collar and a dark, textured garment. His expression is serious, reflecting his status as a prominent figure in the Remonstrant movement.

The print includes Latin inscriptions in the upper corners, noting the year 1643 and the subject's age of sixty. Below the oval portrait, a Dutch poem provides a eulogistic summary of his life and work as a theologian. The engraving technique employed by Salomon Savry, who executed the plate after the design by Cornelis Dirksen Wittenoom, demonstrates the precision characteristic of the era. The cross-hatching and fine lines create depth in the facial features and the folds of the clothing, while the stippling adds subtle shading to the skin tones.

This piece serves as a historical document of the intellectual climate in Amsterdam during the mid-seventeenth century. The inclusion of the publisher's name, P. Walscapelle, indicates the commercial nature of such portrait prints, which were often produced to circulate the likenesses of respected scholars and religious leaders among the public. The composition is balanced and restrained, focusing the viewer's attention on the subject's face. The overall aesthetic is one of sobriety and academic rigour, typical of Dutch portraiture from this period. This print is a fine example of the collaboration between designers, engravers, and publishers in the Dutch Golden Age print market.

You might also like

Cleopatra - Marcantonio Raimondi — Marcantonio Raimondi
Portret van Menno Simons - Cornelis Koning — Cornelis Coning

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Simon-Episcopius_Poster_CompositorV1_1791874889347.jpg?v=1791875126
