Painted by Jan Matejko in 1890, the work captures the subject in his formal academic regalia. Matejko, known for his large-scale historical compositions, brings a similar level of gravity and attention to detail to this individual study.

Tarnowski is shown in a three-quarter view, holding a ceremonial mace, which signifies his authority within the university. He wears a heavy, fur-trimmed robe over a deep crimson garment, rendered with textures that suggest the weight and quality of the fabric. The gold chain of office rests across his shoulders, catching the light and providing a metallic contrast to the soft fur and velvet. The background remains dark and indistinct, which pushes the figure forward and focuses the viewer on the sitter's expression and posture.

Matejko employs a controlled, realistic technique. The brushwork is precise, particularly in the rendering of the facial features and the intricate details of the ceremonial regalia. The lighting is dramatic, typical of the artist's approach to portraiture, creating a sense of presence and dignity. This painting is a clear example of late nineteenth-century academic portraiture, where the artist aims to convey both the physical likeness and the social status of the individual. The composition is balanced, with the vertical line of the mace providing a structural anchor for the figure. The colour palette is dominated by deep reds, blacks, and the warm tones of the fur and gold, creating a sombre yet authoritative atmosphere. This print offers a clear view of Matejko's technical skill in handling light and texture within a formal portrait setting.

You might also like

Louise-Antoinette Feuardent by Jean-Francois Millet
Portrait of Felipe Sojo by José María Velasco Gómez
Jan Matejko artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Stanis-aw-Tarnowski_Poster_CompositorV1_1792114618690.jpg?v=1792135084
