The work displays the artist's characteristic approach to portraiture, which often combined a clear, direct gaze with a focus on the subject's immediate environment and attire. Rivera frequently depicted children with a sense of gravity and presence, moving away from sentimental portrayals to capture a more grounded reality.

The young girl stands centrally, holding a small object in her hands. She wears a plaid dress with white lace detailing, complemented by large yellow bows in her hair. The background is a flat, muted green, which pushes the figure forward. The floorboards are rendered with simple, parallel lines, providing a sense of space without complex perspective. A small note rests on the floor to the left, a common inclusion in Rivera's portraits to provide context or identification for the sitter.

Rivera's technique here is precise and controlled. The application of paint is smooth, allowing the colours to remain clear and distinct. The composition is balanced, relying on the symmetry of the girl's stance and the placement of the hair bows to create a stable visual structure. This piece reflects the artist's interest in Mexican identity and his ability to document the individuals within his social circle. The work is a clear example of his later period, where he often returned to more traditional portrait formats while maintaining his distinct aesthetic sensibilities. The lack of excessive ornamentation ensures that the focus remains entirely on the subject, allowing the viewer to engage with the portrait in a direct manner.

You might also like

Portrait of a Woman in White by Frida Kahlo
The Red Top by Robert Henri

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-the-Young-Girl-Elenita-Carrillo-Flores_Poster_CompositorV1_1792126668876.jpg?v=1792289353
