portrait-of-therese-lessore-walter-sickert
Portrait of Thérèse Lessore - Walter Sickert

A moody, expressive portrait of Thérèse Lessore by Walter Sickert, featuring thick brushwork and a muted, atmospheric colour palette.

Walter Sickert painted this portrait of the artist Thérèse Lessore during his time in Venice. Lessore, who later became his third wife, is depicted with a directness characteristic of Sickert's mature style. The composition focuses on the subject against a dark, atmospheric background, which pushes the figure forward. Sickert employs a restricted palette, relying on muted tones of purple, brown, and sickly green to define the facial features and the texture of the clothing.

His brushwork is deliberate and heavy, showing a move away from the tighter, more academic techniques of his earlier career. The paint application is thick, creating a tactile surface that captures the play of light across the sitter's face. Sickert often worked from photographs or sketches made on site, and this piece reflects his interest in the psychological weight of the individual. The lighting is low, creating deep shadows that obscure parts of the form, forcing the viewer to focus on the expression and the tilt of the head.

Sickert was a central figure in British art during the early twentieth century, known for his influence on the Camden Town Group and his rejection of traditional Victorian sentimentality. His approach to portraiture was often described as unvarnished, prioritising the reality of the subject over idealised beauty. This work demonstrates his ability to convey character through colour and form alone, rather than through elaborate detail or narrative context. The painting remains a study in tonal control, where the interplay between the dark ground and the lighter skin tones creates a sense of volume and presence. It is an example of his later period, where he experimented with more expressive, almost sculptural paint handling, moving towards a more modern interpretation of the human figure.

You might also like

Young Man with a Goatee by Natalia Goncharova
Self-Portrait as an Etcher by Henri Matisse
More by Walter Sickert →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Th-r-se-Lessore_Poster_CompositorV1_1792119302343.jpg?v=1792397504
